In this episode, Nia chats to Vicky, mum of Elsie and Eddie, her youngest, who has Down’s Syndrome. From the first scan to misconceptions about the disorder, from how we can be a kinder society and the role of the media. This is a beautifully frank and honest conversation!
Vicky on Fishing for the Truth
Despite having known Nia since school, I was daunted at the thought of doing a video interview about a topic so incredibly personal that involved my children. When a topic is personal, even talking to a friend can be difficult.
Nia put me completely at ease. She is friendly, professional and organised. It was obvious that she had done her research and had some good open questions prepared to get me talking. At the same time, I never felt I was tied to a pre-prepared script where everything had to be answered. Instead the interview was more of a relaxed, fluid experience, going with the flow of conversation and occasionally being steered back to the crux of whatever point we were discussing.
Probably the highest praise I can give is that Nia is a good listener. Her desire to learn about any given topic is evident. I think she is an excellent interviewer who radiates warmth and is adept at both finding the story and then getting to the heart of it.
